How Chain-Link Fence Pricing Works

Galvanized chain link plans at $35 to $60 per foot installed, vinyl-coated at $40 to $60. It is the most affordable fence we install, and the specification details below are what separate a cheap quote from a durable one.

• Wire gauge — 11-gauge is common on residential runs; 9-gauge is heavier, more expensive and standard on commercial and industrial work.
• Mesh size — 2-inch mesh is the residential standard. Tighter mesh costs more and is specified where security or small pets matter.
• Coating — galvanized is the baseline. Black or green vinyl-coated adds roughly $5 per foot, disappears against a treeline and adds a corrosion barrier.
• Framework — a top rail costs more than tension wire and keeps the fabric straight for far longer. Terminal, corner and gate posts (the posts at the ends, corners and gate openings) are heavier than line posts (the standard posts spaced along a straight run) and are sized for the load they carry.
• Privacy slats — woven through the mesh after installation, priced per foot on top of the fence itself.
• Height — taller panels need deeper posts and more staging, so the rate climbs with it. Check your municipal maximum before pricing the height you want.
• Grade and soil — slopes, rock and the compacted clay common across Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton add $5 to $15 per foot, because posts take longer to set.
• Site access — tight side yards, stairs, decks and mature landscaping slow a crew down. Hand-digging an inaccessible run adds $8 to $15 per foot.
• Gates — priced per gate, not per foot: $350 to $600 for a single walk gate, $800 to $1,200 or more for a double or driveway gate.
• Old fence removal — taking down and hauling away what is there adds $8 to $18 per foot, plus $3 to $8 where concrete footings have to come out.
• Run length — anything under roughly 60 feet carries $5 to $10 per foot more, because mobilization, travel and disposal spread over fewer feet.

Where Chain-Link Makes Sense

Those ranges are for planning; a real number needs a measure. Chain link is the lowest-cost way to enclose a large area, which is why it dominates side yards, dog runs, commercial yards and sports enclosures.
