Aurora's Fence Installation Contractor for Village Lots and Estate Properties
Aurora rewrote its fence rules in 2022, and the current by-law is more specific than most in the GTA — different front-yard limits for Estate and Rural properties, a driveway visibility rule with its own construction requirement, and a defined way of measuring height on uneven ground. We build to what 6429-22 actually says.

When we compare materials and access options for Aurora, we explain where a synthetic fence system such as vinyl, a perimeter fence with security upgrades, or an electric gate operator makes sense for the property.
Local Fence Planning in Aurora
Most Aurora jobs are a backyard privacy fence, a pool enclosure, an estate frontage, or replacing a fence that has reached the end of its life. Aurora does not require a permit to build or replace an ordinary compliant fence — a pool enclosure is the exception — so the constraint is the by-law, not the paperwork.

Fence Heights Under Aurora By-Law 6429-22
Aurora enacted Fence and Pool Enclosure By-law 6429-22 in June 2022, repealing the older 4753.05.P and 6086-18. An ordinary front-yard fence is limited to 1.2 metres. Residential side and rear yards are permitted up to 2.0 metres, and non-residential up to 2.5 metres.
Estate and Rural properties are treated differently in the front yard: 1.2 metres within 2.4 metres of the highway line, and 2.0 metres beyond that — but an Estate or Rural front-yard fence has to be of open-fence construction. That single requirement decides the design on most Aurora estate frontages before anything else does.
There are also specific higher allowances: 2.5 metres in defined non-front-yard situations adjoining multiple-residential or non-residential uses or a public walkway, recreational fences up to 3.0 metres residential and 4.5 metres non-residential with open construction above 2 metres, and entry features up to 3.0 metres on Rural, Institutional and Estate property.

The Driveway Rule and How Aurora Measures Height
A fence within 2.4 metres of a driveway or parking-lot access in Aurora is limited to 1.2 metres, and it has to use the prescribed open or mesh construction for that first 2.4 metres. It is a visibility rule rather than a height rule, and it applies to ordinary residential driveways, not just commercial entrances.
Height in Aurora is measured from the average grade level perpendicular to and one metre away from the fence on either side. On a lot where the two sides sit at different elevations that definition decides whether a plan complies, so on sloped Aurora properties we work the height from that measurement rather than from whichever side looks lower.
Aurora prohibits barbed and sharp wire, chicken wire, sheet and corrugated metal, and electrified fencing. There is a narrow agricultural exception: on land actually used to raise livestock, electric fencing may be used solely to contain livestock, limited to 12 volts with warning signs at intervals no greater than 12 metres. A canine electronic containment system is separately excluded from the prohibition.
Why Choose GTA Fencing Company in Aurora?
Aurora's current fence by-law is more prescriptive than most, which is good news: the rules are knowable in advance. The failures we get called to fix here are almost always a fence built to a generic GTA assumption rather than to 6429-22.
Estate and Rural Frontages Built Open, Because They Have To Be
An Estate or Rural front-yard fence in Aurora must be of open-fence construction. Homeowners who want privacy at the road are frequently quoted a solid panel by someone who has not read the schedule. We design the frontage open and put the privacy where it is permitted.
The Driveway Visibility Rule, Applied Correctly
Within 2.4 metres of a driveway or parking access, a fence is capped at 1.2 metres and must be open or mesh construction for that stretch. It catches ordinary residential driveways, not just commercial entrances, and it changes where a privacy run can start.
Height Measured the Way the By-Law Defines It
Aurora measures from the average grade level perpendicular to and one metre away from the fence on either side. On a lot with a grade difference that definition, not the eye, decides whether the fence complies.
Pool Enclosures Specified to Pass Inspection
A single-property pool enclosure in Aurora is 1.5 metres, gates are self-closing with a lockable self-latching device, and no opening may pass a 100 millimetre sphere. We build to the numbers rather than adjusting after an inspection.

Aurora Fence Installation FAQs
Common questions about fencing in Aurora and the surrounding area.
No. The Town of Aurora states that no permit is required to construct or replace an ordinary fence. The exception is a fence that forms a pool enclosure, which does require a permit.
That does not mean the fence is unregulated. Fence and Pool Enclosure By-law 6429-22 still governs height, location, construction type and materials, and a non-compliant fence can be ordered changed after the fact. Building it right is cheaper than building it twice.
An ordinary front-yard fence in Aurora is limited to 1.2 metres. Residential side and rear yards are permitted up to 2.0 metres, and non-residential properties up to 2.5 metres.
Estate and Rural properties have their own front-yard rule: 1.2 metres within 2.4 metres of the highway line and 2.0 metres beyond it, with the front-yard fence required to be of open-fence construction. Higher allowances exist in defined situations — 2.5 metres adjoining multiple-residential, non-residential or a public walkway, recreational fences up to 3.0 metres residential and 4.5 metres non-residential, and entry features up to 3.0 metres on Rural, Institutional and Estate lands.
Height is measured from the average grade level perpendicular to and one metre away from the fence on either side, which is the detail that decides most sloped-lot questions in Aurora.
A pool enclosure serving a single residential property in Aurora must be at least 1.5 metres, measured from the outside; other cases require 2.0 metres. The 2026 Pool Enclosure Permit fee is $383, and the Hot Tub Permit fee is $203.
Every gate must be self-closing and fitted with a lockable self-latching device. The operating mechanism has to be on the inside near the top, or, where it is accessible from the outside, at least 1.5 metres above grade, and the design must prevent a quick release from outside. No unprotected opening within or below the enclosure may pass a sphere greater than 100 millimetres — tighter in places, with metal picket openings at 38 millimetres where horizontal members are closer than 1.2 metres, and chain-link mesh at a 40 millimetre maximum.
The permit is required before excavation or erection. Aurora does allow the pool to be filled while a compliant temporary enclosure is in place, but the pool cannot be used until the permanent enclosure has been inspected and confirmed by the Town. A hot tub or swim spa with the prescribed permanently attached, lockable structural cover capable of supporting at least 27.2 kilograms is exempt while it stays compliant.
No. By-law 6429-22 states that, except for section 20, the Line Fences Act does not apply to any part of Aurora. The statutory fence-viewer process that some Ontario municipalities administer is not available here.
In practice that makes cost sharing on a boundary fence a private matter between the two owners. We quote the work clearly enough that it can be split, put the fence where the two of you agree, and stay out of the negotiation.
Yes. Aurora's by-law allows 2.5 metres on non-residential property, and up to 4.5 metres for non-residential recreational fencing where the construction above 2 metres is open. That covers most of what business parks, plazas and institutional sites along the town's commercial corridors actually need.
We install perimeter, security and industrial chain-link fencing, along with automated slide and swing gates and access control. Larger Aurora projects get a site visit and a written proposal.
