Halton Hills' Fence Contractor for Georgetown, Acton, and Rural Properties
Halton Hills has the lowest residential front-yard fence limit of anywhere we work — 0.90 metres — and sight triangles that change size depending on what class of road you are on. Both are in Fence By-law 2002-0060, and both decide the design before a material is chosen.

Fence Repair, Gates, and Post Replacement
When we compare materials and access options for Halton Hills, we explain where a synthetic fence system such as vinyl, a perimeter fence with security upgrades, or an electric gate operator makes sense for the property.
Local Fence Planning in Halton Hills
Most Halton Hills work is a backyard privacy build or a full replacement in Georgetown or Acton, with rural property-line and agricultural fencing across the hamlets and the escarpment-side lots. The front-yard rule here is stricter than most people expect, so we settle that first.
- Wood privacy fencing to the 2.13 metre rear allowance
- Vinyl fencing
- Chain-link fencing
- Agricultural and rural property-line fencing
- Open-type front-yard and sight-triangle fencing
- Gate installation
- Old fence removal and replacement
- Targeted repair for posts, gates, and storm-damaged panels
0.90 Metres in the Front Yard, 2.13 in the Back
Fence By-law 2002-0060 limits a residential front-yard fence to 0.90 metres. Interior side, exterior side and rear yard fences are permitted up to 2.13 metres, and where no lower rule applies the general maximum is 2.74 metres.
The front-yard figure is the one that surprises people. At 0.90 metres, a front fence in Georgetown or Acton is a boundary marker, not a screen, and any plan that assumes a four-foot front fence is already over. Where privacy at the front matters, the workable answer is usually planting behind a compliant fence rather than a taller fence.
Height is measured from the highest grade within one metre on either side of the fence, and fences must be maintained in good repair. Where a subdivision or site-plan agreement imposes its own fencing requirement, that requirement can supersede the normal rule — which is worth checking on newer Georgetown streets before assuming the by-law numbers govern.

Sight Triangles That Change Size With the Road
Halton Hills does not use one sight-triangle dimension. The legs are 4.5 metres where two local roads meet, 7 metres where a local or collector road intersects a collector, and 12 metres where a local or collector intersects a Regional or MTO road — unless zoning or a site plan prescribes different dimensions.
Inside that triangle, an ordinary fence is limited to 0.90 metres. But qualifying open-type construction is permitted up to 1.71 metres, which is the practical route to keeping some height at a corner without breaching the visibility rule.
That is a genuinely useful allowance and it is routinely missed. On a Georgetown corner lot we will usually design the triangle section as open-type rather than surrendering the height entirely.
Why Choose GTA Fencing Company in Halton Hills?
Halton Hills is stricter at the front and more generous at the back than most of the GTA, and its sight triangles are sized by road class rather than by a single number. Getting a plan right here means reading the by-law rather than importing a Toronto assumption.
The 0.90 Metre Front-Yard Limit, Stated Up Front
A residential front-yard fence in Halton Hills is limited to 0.90 metres — lower than anywhere else we work. We tell you that before you fall in love with a design, and we plan front-yard privacy through planting rather than through height.
Open-Type Construction Where It Buys You Height
Inside a sight triangle an ordinary fence is capped at 0.90 metres, but qualifying open-type construction is permitted up to 1.71 metres. On a corner lot that allowance is the difference between a real fence and a token one, and it is routinely overlooked.
Sight Triangles Sized to the Actual Road Class
Legs run 4.5 metres for two local roads, 7 metres where a local or collector meets a collector, and 12 metres at a Regional or MTO road — unless zoning or a site plan says otherwise. We measure to the class of road you are actually on.
Agricultural Rules Applied Where They Apply
Barbed wire is permitted in an Agricultural Zone and electric fencing is allowed on land lawfully used for agriculture, solely to contain animals, in the prescribed 12 volt arrangement with signage. On residential property none of that is permitted, and we do not blur the two.

Halton Hills Fence Installation FAQs
Common questions about fencing in Halton Hills and the surrounding area.
A residential front-yard fence in Halton Hills is limited to 0.90 metres. Interior side, exterior side and rear yard fences are permitted up to 2.13 metres, and where no lower rule applies the general maximum under the by-law is 2.74 metres.
Height is measured from the highest grade within one metre on either side of the fence. Fences must be maintained in good repair, and where a subdivision or site-plan agreement imposes its own fencing requirement, that requirement can supersede the normal rule.
The 0.90 metre front-yard limit is the number that catches most people out, because it is meaningfully lower than what neighbouring municipalities allow.
The sight-triangle legs vary by road class: 4.5 metres where two local roads intersect, 7 metres where a local or collector road intersects a collector, and 12 metres where a local or collector intersects a Regional or MTO road — unless zoning or site-plan dimensions prescribe otherwise.
Within the triangle an ordinary fence is limited to 0.90 metres, but qualifying open-type construction can reach 1.71 metres. On corner lots we normally design the triangle section as open-type so you keep usable height without breaching the visibility rule.
Not any more. By-law 2026-0031, adopted on April 20, 2026, amended Fence By-law 2002-0060 so that, except for section 20, the Line Fences Act does not apply in the Town.
That means the provincial fence-viewer process for boundary fence disputes is no longer the route here, and cost sharing on a shared fence is a private arrangement between the two owners. We provide a written quote clear enough to share and split.
On residential property the by-law prohibits barbed wire, chicken wire and specified wire and cable fencing. In an Agricultural Zone, barbed wire is permitted.
Electric fencing is otherwise prohibited but is allowed on land lawfully used for agriculture when it is used solely to contain animals, limited to the prescribed 12 volt trickle arrangement with warning signage. There is no blanket exemption that takes a farm outside the by-law — the allowances are specific, and we build to them rather than around them.
Yes. The Fence By-law itself contains exemptions and special treatment for specified industrial, railway, hydro and utility, public-hazard and municipal recreational fencing, which is a large part of what commercial work here involves.
We install perimeter, security and industrial chain-link fencing for the manufacturing and logistics properties in the Town's employment areas, along with wider vehicle gates and access control. Larger projects get a site visit and a written proposal.
